A Warm Welcome to Reception Class
Welcome to Appley Bridge All Saints' CE Reception Class. Our teacher is Mrs Green and our teaching assistants are Mrs MacFarlin, Mrs Brannon and Miss Hooper. We will be having fun whilst learning lots during the year and you will find photos of what we get up to posted here and on Twitter (#ABASYR) as we go along.
Our First Week
Our Reception children have had a brilliant first week and have tried really hard with everything they have done. Here are just a few of the things we have been up to.
Autumn Fun
During our first half term in Reception, we had lots of fun learning about so many different things. We learned about ourselves and how we are all different and special. We learned all about autumn in the forest and around school. Sometimes we had fun getting muddy and making mud paintings and sometimes we had our snack in the forest. We collected lots of colourful leaves and made autumn hedgehogs. We learned about harvest and where our food comes from and we collected lots of things from the hedgerows that animals might collect for food during the winter. We sorted and counted what we collected too. We made bread and ate it, and looked at some fruits we hadn’t seen before and we even got to taste the fruits – we thought they were yummy, tasty, juicy, sweet, tangy and crunchy. We made a scarecrow for the display in our church and even did some sewing on his face. We called him Mr Straw after the scarecrow in the story ‘The Scarecrow’s Secret’. We had fun with our phonics and number work too. Here are some photos to give you a taster of some of the things we got up to in our first half term.
Spring Time
During the spring term we have been very busy in Reception learning about all kinds of different things. Here are pictures of just some of the things we have been up to. Dinosaurs was one of our favourites when we made collages and fossils and learned lots about the past. Of course, we loved World Book Day - we dressed up and did lots of different activities during the day. It was great when we had a visit and a story from our class governor on National Storytelling Day. We have been finding out who our neighbours are and looking on the globe to see who our global neighbours might be. We found out about continents and which animals live where. We have been working on making a map of the classroom and we went on a bear hunt by using a map of the school grounds to find the bears that were hiding. These are just some of the exciting things we have been up to and we hope you enjoy looking at our photos. At the moment, we are practising our balances in PE and we are doing brilliantly! We are now looking forward to getting back to the forest when the weather is bit drier so that we can make a map of the forest too and do lots of other forest activities!

Reception Class Long Term Plan
Phonics Scheme
We use the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme of work to teach phonics.
Articulation of Phonemes Video
It is essential that children are taught the correct articulation of phonemes so that they will be able to segment and blend properly and therefore read and spell words with confidence. Here is a short video showing the correct pronunciation of all the phonemes we will teach.
