Appley Bridge All Saints'

Welcome to the Year 5 class page. Mrs Harris, Miss Hooper and Mr Hunter will all be working in Year 5 this year. On this page you will find information about the curriculum and year group expectations in Year 5 as well as lots of photographs. Take a look at the updates each half term to see what the class have been getting up to.

Inventors and Inventions

We were amazed with how many things were invented in Baghdad c900CE, the city was an important place of learning and many inventions used today were invented then. We looked at how Baghdad was so much more advanced than Europe at the time.

We looked at how cams work and the different shapes affected the movement of the cam followers. After designing our own moving toys it was time to start making them and we were all proud of our finished products.

Food, Glorious Food

We have been finding out where our favourite foods come from, how different foods grow in different climates and how many miles some of our food travels before we eat it. We have also discussed the importance of buying local to help the environment. As part of DT, we have looked the food Christians around the world eat as part of their Christmas celebrations. We decided to cook Latkes from Israel, Kolaczki cookies from Poland and Buche de Noel from France, what a delicious end to our topic.

Saxon Day

What an amazing day living as Saxons! Our first task was to build our house, after collecting and stripping the willow, we were finally ready to begin construction. We wove the willow carefully then used mud and straw to make sure it would protect us from the elements.

Then, after spending some time hunting, we were ready to start preparing our tea. This was seasonal vegetables, barley and even some delicious lamb. Our next task was to prepare the fire to cook it on.  After a patient wait it was finally time to tuck in to our hearty bowl of pottage.

Bikeability Training

The children have worked extremely hard to learn all the skills necessary to ride safely on the road. They impressed the instructors with their hard work, focus and determination throughout the week.

Music

Wider Opportunities Music - Red Admiral

The children are all prepared for their music lessons and will be learning a range of brass instruments.
